Merc Volleyball reaches halfway stage

The Mercantile Volleyball Tournament 2018 will reach the final stage in the second week of November as the two-month long competitio­n reached its halfway mark last week. Played in three categories, the Mercantile Volleyball Championsh­ip will comprise of Super League, Championsh­ip and Division 'A' tournament­s. The finals will be held on November 10 and 11 at the National Youth Indoor Stadium in Maharagama.

With its sheer passion for sport, MAS fosters a sporting culture within the organisati­on across all tiers, giving special emphasis to popularisi­ng the country’s national sport, volleyball among its employees. Furthermor­e, MAS also sponsored the Mercantile Volleyball Tournament for the past two years as the Platinum sponsor, and will continue with their commitment for yet another year.

Being one of the strongest contenders of the tournament, sponsors MAS will be represente­d by 20 teams from all divisions across the island to vie for the coveted titles this year. MAS’ Casualline clinched the Women’s Super League for six consecutiv­e years, whereas Leisurelin­e won the Men’s Super League last year. MAS’ Linea Clothing won the second runner-up in championsh­ip last year, while Stretchlin­e claimed the runners-up in Division 'A'. In fact, 2017 was a successful year with MAS bagging 11 Mercantile titles across all 14 mercantile sports.

The Mercantile Volleyabal­l Tournament made a kick- start with its preliminar­y rounds on September 1 at the National Youth Outdoor Stadium in Maharagama.
