Kanishka spins St. Peter’s to innings victory

Left- arm spinner Kanishka Maduwantha ended with an impressive bowling figures of 6 for 41 to guide St. Peter’s to a convincing innings and 74-run win over the hapless President’s College, Kotte in their Under- 19 Inter- School Cricket encounter concluded at Bambalapit­iya yesterday.

The foundation for the win was laid on day one by Santhush Gunatillek­e who cracked a 123 and Nipunaka Fonseka who made an unbeaten 84 which helped the Peterites make a formidable score of 281 for 5. Earlier the Peterite bowling trio of Santhush Gunatillek­e, Tariq Saboor and Kanishka Maduwantha shared seven wickets to bundle out President’s for a low score of 92 runs.

In the second day’s proceeding­s saw St. Peter’s declaring their innings on their overnight score and President’s Kotte batting the second time had a daunting task of erasing a massive deficit of 189 runs.

They found spinner Kanishka too hot to handle as he wrecked their batting to have them struggling for survival. Kanishka ripped through their batting to bowl them out for just 115 runs with the match ending midway in the second session.

Lanka youth player Chamindu Wijesinghe who made a top score of 78 which had six boundaries and two sixes and Ravin de Silva who made an unbeaten 54 before making the declaratio­n with the score on 302 for 7.

The first day’s proceeding­s saw Lakshitha Rasanjana who ended with a seven wicket haul ruining the De Mazenod batting to bowl them out for 146. De Mazenod batting the second time was on 18 for 1.

Thomians on top

An unbeaten 122 by Ravindu de Silva saw S. Thomas’ take the upper hand against Prince of Wales when play stopped for lunch on day two in the match played at Mt Lavinia.

Ravindu’s ton supported by Umayanga Suwaris saw S. Thomas’ in reply to the Cambrians score of 148 post a formidable score of 300 for 6 declared. Cambrians batting the second time was on 78 for 1.

Royal Colombo has put themselves in line to record an outright win ag ainst Bandaranay­ake MMV Gampaha at the end of the first session of play on day two in the match played at Reid Avenue.

Royal after bundling out their opponents for a low score of 105 helped by Ahan Wickramasi­nghe and Pasindu Sooriyaban­dara ended day one in a strong position of 235 for 5.

The second day’s play saw Royal from their overnight score adding 46 runs for the loss of three wickets and declared their innings on 281 for 8. Bandaranay­ake MMV batting the second time with a deficit of 176 runs to erase was in a bad position of 37 for 6.

St. Sebastian’s went into the lunch break on day one on 132 for 6 against St. Servatius Matara in the match played at Moratuwa.
