Golfing juniors to the fore

-

A programme has been launched by the Junior Clinic of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) to recruit a fresh pool of budding young golfers for Boys and Girls in the age groups of 9 to 13 years on a programme named 'A Day of Discovery'.

The main aim of the programme which was inaugurated in 2011 is to discover talented young golfers outside the RCGC membership. A long term programme was introduced at the inauguration was in place to identify, train and create future golf champions of Sri Lanka. Provisions were put in place to twenty students to receive free of charge access to training, equipment, practice facilities and access to to the course via this programme.

The endeavour of the RCGC in this programme was borne fruit when one of its students Tania Minel Balasuriya, succeeded in becoming Sri Lanka National Ladies Champion in just 15 years of

age through this programme.

Speaking at a press briefing at the club, Jehan De Saram, PGA Head of Golf Professional at the RCGC said that there is no question of talent in our country harbors much talent, but we need to be proactive in seeking out and nurturing it.

It is noteworthy that many of our award winning golfers don't fit the mould of the typical Colombo elitist that many golf enthusiasts may be perceived as De Saram said. The main target of starting the Junior Clinic programme is in first place to dispel this notion and create an opportunity for anyone to learn and benefit from the game. Through the generous of the Royal Colombo Golf Club and its members, this initiative has helped to nurture the talents of many young golfers, the Head of Golf Professional at RCGC said.

A Day Of Discovery is powered by the support of MTV/MBC Channels.
