Royalist Shaheed Hilmy National Champion

Young Shaheed Hilmy of Royal College (RC) proved his prowess in Carrom when he defeated former world champion Nishantha Fernando 2-1 to win the Men's Singles championsh­ip at the 51st National Carrom Championsh­ip conducted by the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) recently at its Headquarte­rs in Kohuwala.

Chalani Lakmali of Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) secured a Double when she won the Women's Singles crown for the third consecutiv­e year, beating Rebecca Dalrene of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) 2-1, and then partnered her SLAF colleague Udesh Chandima to clinch the Mixed Doubles.

There were 6 Slams (3 each of White and Black Slams). They were by Shaheed Hilmy 1 (BS), Nishantha Fernando 1 (WS), Hunaid Hateem 1 (BS), Upali Premachand­ra 1 (WS), M. Sherifdeen 1 (BS) and W.M. Mufees 1 (WS).

This championsh­ip, conducted under 6 events- Men's and Women's Singles and Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Veterans' Singles, was worked off from January 13-February 10, with over 350 Slicers islandwide in contention. Charith Madushanka (SLA) 2-1 (22-25, 25-0, 25-6); Runners-up: Anas Ahamed-Suraj Maduwantha (SLA); 3rd Place: Hasitha Anuruddha-Avon Wickremasi­nghe (SLAF)

Women's Doubles:

Champions: Joseph Roshita (SLN)-Tharushi Himahansik­a (Mahamaya Balika, Nugegoda) 2-0 (25-23, 25-7); Runners-up: Maduwanthi Gunadasa-M. Chitradevi (SLA); 3rd Place: Yasika Rahubadda-Chalini Lakmali Liyanage (SLAF) 2-0 (252, 25-0)

Mixed Doubles:

Champions: Udesh ChandimaCh­alani Lakmali Liyanage (SLAF) 2-0 (25-12, 25-10); Runners-up: Anas Ahamed-Rebecca Dalrine (SLA); 3rd Place: Hasitha Anuruddha-Yasika Rahubaddha (SLAF) 2-0 (25-24, 25-11)

Veterans' Singles:

Champion: Hunaid Hateem (Dematagoda United SC) 2-1 (2423, 19-25, 25-24); Runner-up: Upali Premachand­ra (SL Parliament); 3rd Place: K.G.S.J. Prasad (Kandy SC) 2-0 (25-19, 25-9)
