Computer Chips is the future business

- By Jayampathy Jayasinghe

Chips, Semi- conductors and Memory Devices, are the backbone of any economy as everything is becoming electronic in today’s development the world over, according to Dr. Pradip K. Dutta, Group Vice President of Synopsys Inc and Managing Director of Synopsys –South Asia.

In an interview with the Sunday Times Business Times held at the new Synopsys Office at the Orion City complex Colombo last week, Dr. Dutta said that 700 million people who live in rural India below the poverty line have to come out of the doldrums by engaging with the electronic industry like in many developed economies in the South Asian region.

“Electronically operated devices the middle income people use today like the microwave ovens, laptops, mobile phones all contain micro – chips. The Synopsys company plays a major role in the development of such chips.”

Referring to the Intel company as the chip designer, he said Synopsys is found in the inner sanctum of sophisticated software that Intel manufactures as a tools company. Chips have become more complex as it is a collection of transistors in a miniscule chip that contains billions of transistors that Synopsys helps design which is 70 per cent of the company’s business.

“We are also the number one communication of IP business. During the last three years we developed an Enterprise Application, a software package used in banks, hospitals with security codes. This application has become very critical in financial and in the health sector. Owing to technical glitch a bank in the recent past transferred billions of US dollars to a wrong account,” he said.

“Software integrity is a new business that we developed. We also have acquired 80-90 companies during the past 30 years during our existence. Sri Lanka is an important market for us and we like to work with the government of Sri Lanka. Synopsys is a high tech research development US company operating in this part of the region,” he added.

Synopsys Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, is a fully owned subsidiary of Synopsys Incorporation, Mountainview CA, US. It has a long history of being a global leader in electronic design automation, semiconductor IP and is growing its leadership in software security and quality solutions.

Synopsys invest 31 per cent of itst revenue on R&D. The company first came to Sri Lanka in August 2015 with the acquisition of Arenta. The Sri Lanka team at Synopsys has grown to 160 employees. The key work being done includes software development, product validation, customer support, and application engineering across different product lines.

Dr. Dutta has been heading the India operation since 2000, overseeing the growth from a little over 50 employees to more than a 2800 highly skilled employee- base spread across Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune and Colombo.
