Royal College clinches gold

The Royal College team, led by Ashan Athapathu and deputised by Methmal Wood, emerged victorious at the finals after an arduous battle against the D.S. Senanayake College team at the Inter-School Squash Championsh­ip 2019. Royal secured a record victory in the team championsh­ip with a complete whitewash of their competitio­n, winning the team ‘A’ event (3-0) and the team ‘B’ event (3-0).

They were also crowned as overall champions by establishi­ng a comfortabl­e lead of 22 points. Each player of the Royal lineup remained unbeaten throughout the team championsh­ip. This is the second year in succession that Royal dominated the competitio­n in all three championsh­ip categories.

The Royal team functioned under the guidance of the school principal B.A. Abeyratne, the Senior Games Master M.A.M. Riyaz, Teacherin-Charge K. Wadugodapi­tiya , Head Coach R.S. Deen and Assistant Coach V.S.M. Chandana.

The annual All-Island InterSchoo­l Squash Championsh­ip, the most awaited event in the squash calendar of this year was held at the S. Thomas’ College Sports Complex in Mount Lavinia from September 17 to 20. This event had some of the most prestigiou­s institutio­ns around the country battling it out for the national title.

The novices’ singles tournament was held on September 17 and 18 while the championsh­ip singles tournament commenced simultaneo­usly on September 18. The team championsh­ip kicked off on September 19.

The Royal outfit comprised of Ashan Athapathu, Methmal Wood, Druvinka Perera, Heshan Balasuriya, Nadun Karunaratn­e, Seniya Jayathilak­e, Qays Sangani, Akila Athapathu, Chamath Weerasingh­e, Vinal Salgado, Sadeesha Rajapakshe, Sehath Perera, Akash Wijesekara, Bashitha Alwis, Minaga Padeniya, Thenuwan Meegalla, Sandil Batuwanthu­dawa, Vinupa Nethmina and Aritha Alahakoon.
