Don your superhero kit and do your own 'heroic' deed for the environment

When we think of cosplaying, we imagine individuals dressed in elaborate costumes at convention halls. The idea of them collecting garbage is one that would surely never pop into our heads, but that is where Cosplay Clean Up Global comes in. Created by Sharan Velauthan, a Sri Lankan influencer currently living in Australia who has teamed up with Lauren Sandeman, a marine biologist and activist, they have held two events in Melbourne, Australia.

This month they are here organising another beach clean-up at Kinross Beach on Saturday, October 12 at 4 p.m. ‘Cosplay Clean Up Sri Lanka’ is partnered with the Geek Club of Sri Lanka and Mindful Travels.

“There’s the belief that ‘I am just one person, what can I do?’ Cosplay Clean Up Global is joining hands with multiple organizations to show that one person can do something. Cosplay Clean Up is a mindset changer. We want to inspire more people to be an #everydaysuperhero whether that’s attending a beach clean-up, organizing their own beach clean-up, picking up trash on the road, being mindful about not throwing trash on the road, switching from single use plastic to reusable, being mindful about the food consumed and thrown and more. Small choices made by individuals to collectively make an impact,” Sharan explains.

“Not everyone is a scientist, marine biologist or is able to be a Greta Thunberg. But everyone can be an #everydaysuperhero. So that’s what we want to do,” he adds.

If you want to be a part of their initiative, head over to Kinross in your superhero costume. Visit https://instagram.com/cosplaycleanupglobal? igshid=18xfm8anvwjaq to learn more about Cosplay Clean Up Global.
