Culinary Food Expo in October

- By Quintus Perera

For the 19th occasion, the Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka is organising the internationally famed Culinary Art Food Expo 2019 on October 21, 22 and 23 at the BMICH, Colombo.

A media briefing was held at Hotel Mandarina, Colombo last week to announce the event.

Gerard Mendis, Chairman, Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka ( CCSL) said that this Culinary Expo is South East Asia’s biggest Food and Hospitality Show and culinary challenge organised by CCSL together with the World Association of Chefs Societies and CDC Events and Travels, the professional exhibition organisers.

At this Culinary Expo there would be over 1,600 chefs from resorts, hotels and restaurants from across the country and many countries of the region, in addition to 200 – 300 bartenders who are expected to take part in the competitions.

Over 25 foreign judges from Australia, Europe and Far East Asia will be involved in the judging.

Mr. Mendis, on the sidelines of the media briefing, told the Business Times that culinary is part and parcel of tourism industry. Tourism is a very sensitive industry and without peace and security is bound to fail and cited the April 21 Easter Sunday attacks as an example.

He said that due to security issues, some top professionals are leaving the country and blamed politicians for failing to ensure stability of the country.

“The politicians must take a cue from the religious amity and togetherness that the religious leaders of the country have shown in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday massacre,” he added.

Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs John Amaratunga, who was the Chief Guest at the event, said there was no truth in any possible disturbance of the peace in the country. He said that these were rumours, accusing politicians of spreading them and it was clear that the opposition was trying to show that the present government is not stable.
