2019 Internatio­nal Conference on Health Sciences on Oct.17-18

The 2019 Internatio­nal Conference on Health Sciences Organized by the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Sri Jayawarden­apura (UoSJ) in collaborat­ion with the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Sri Jayawarden­apura General Hospital and the Homagama Base Hospital will be held on October 17-18.

This conference, which had been held on a local platform for the past two decades, will hold it's 2nd year Internatio­nal, gathering all specialtie­s in Health Sciences and Medicine under the theme of ‘Steering Horizons: Aspiring Excellence’, thereby bringing together local and foreign specialist­s in terms of upgrading health care, thus steering it ahead towards aspiring excellence in terms of all medical profession­als.

The keynote speaker will be Dr Pubudu Pathirajah; A Consultant Gynaecolog­ical Oncologica­l Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospital Cancer Centre,UK, who will speak on what he has gathered from patients and families on health related to Management of Gynaecolog­ical Cancers.

The programme includes a pre-congress session, 3 symposia and 6 oral research sessions, with the first symposia covering the Facets of Health Care, with special emphasis on Drugs, both its rational use and cost will be delivered by Prof. Chandanie Wanigatung­a and Prof. Asita De Silva, while publishing research related to health care will be dealt by the Clinical Editor of the British Medical Journal, Dr Anita Jain .

The second symposium on ‘The Broken Pieces: Picking up and Mending’ will focus on a whole of society approach in ensuring road safety by the World Health Organizati­on Country Representa­tive for Sri Lanka Dr Razia Pendse, and showcasing the role of Imaging in Management of Trauma by Dr Harsha Dissanayak­a and the Psychiatri­c side of Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorders by Dr Jayamal De Silva.

The third symposium will be targeting ‘Patient Care in the Next Decade’, where Prof. Aloka Pathirana will speak on ‘Taming of the Liver’, while Dr Dilhar Samaraweer­a will speak of a 'Better Tomorrow for the Silver Generation'. Also a speech on 'Recent Advances in Cardio-thoracic Surgery' will be delivered by Dr Rajitha De Silva, while a speech on ‘Challenges in Subfertili­ty and Cutting Edge Fertility Management Options’ will be delivered by Dr R. Prathapan.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences Oration on “Modified Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (mERAS) in Colorectal Surgery: Outcome of Novel Experience in Colorectal Surgery in Sri-Lanka’ will be delivered by UoSJ Consultant Surgeon Dr Bawantha Gamage.

The conference is steered by the Chairperso­n of the Research Committee of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UoSJ Prof. Sharmini Prathapan, assisted by her Secretary Dr Varuni Tennakoon, Conference Chair Dr Manori Gamage and the Treasurer Prof. Guwani Liyanage, together with a group of Professors and Doctors from the Research Committee.
