Ayurvedic institute in Gampaha to be elevated to university status

Cabinet approval has been granted to upgrade the Gampaha Wickramara­chchi Ayurvedic Institute to university status.

The Gampaha Wickramara­chchi Ayurvedic lnstitute, which is currently affiliated to the University of Kelaniya under the University Grants Commission (UGC), offers undergradu­ate and postgradua­te degrees in Ayurveda and allied sciences.

The country's policy framework "Vistas of Prosperity and

Splendour" identified that the institutio­n should be upgraded to become a fullyfledg­ed university.

Accordingl­y, the

Cabinet approved the proposal presented by the

Higher Education

Minister to upgrade the

Gampaha Wickramara­chchi

Ayurvedic institute as a university, which will give priority to the study of the country's traditiona­l and indigenous medicine.

This week the Cabinet also approved the constructi­on contract for phase two of a proposed building complex for the Wayamba University's Faculty of Technology.

The Higher Education Minister proposed to award the constructi­on contract of the building complex to Sathuta Builders (Pvt) Company in Kurunegala for Rs. 1560.36 million (without VAT), upon the recommenda­tion of a cabinet appointed standing procuremen­t committee.

Another proposal by the Higher Education Minister for the constructi­on of a hostel, a workshop and a canteen at the University of Vocational Technology in Ratmalana was also granted Cabinet approval. This project was estimated at a cost of Rs. 927.34 million.

The Gampaha Wickramara­chchi Ayurvedic lnstitute, which is currently affiliated to the University of Kelaniya under the University Grants Commission (UGC), offers undergradu­ate and postgradua­te degrees in Ayurveda and allied sciences.
