Carrom Federation AGM fixed for November 6

- By Lakshman Ranasinghe

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Carrom Federation (CFSL) is to be held on November 6 at the Duncan White Auditorium of the Sports Ministry.

The last tenure of CFSL ended in May but due to COVID-19 epidemic lockdown the AGM was not held. It was further pushed back after objections were raised by the Nationalised Services and affiliates on holding of the AGM. It is understood that the Nationalised Services Carrom Association (NSCA) and its affiliates had not renewed their membership since 2017.

An election committee appointed at a Special General Meeting in 2019 comprising Dharmasena Kahandawela (Retired Additional Director General of Customs) as Chairman, Shelton Premaratne and D.A. Senadira submitted a report on the objections raised by the NSCA. They too confirmed that the NSCA had not renewed its membership since 2017 and ceased to be a member of the Carrom Federation.

Fresh nominations were called with a closing date of September 8, and was open for objections till September 24. As no objections were raised, the date of the AGM was fixed for November 6.

It was reported that the posts of General Secretary, Treasurer, Tournament Secretary and Assistant Treasurer will be uncontested. The election of the President, Vice Presidents, Assistant Secretary and ten committee members will take place at the AGM.

The CFSL who moved from place to place without having a permanent building to locate their headquarters and a venue to conduct its international events were happy to hear that the present Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa has promised to provide a building with all facilities.

This decision of the young minister will bring smiles for the carrom players of Sri Lanka who have brought this little island nation to a country to be reckoned globally.

Apart from M.J.M. Lafir, Sri Lankan slicer Nishantha Fernando clinched an individual world title when he won the singles event at the Carrom World Championship in 2012 hosted by Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka had won the Team Championship of the World Carrom Championship held in 2008 in France and in 2016 at the 7th World Championship in Birmingham, England.
