New ambassador leads South Korea's National Day celebratio­n

The South Korean Embassy celebrated the National Foundation day of Korea yesterday. It is the first National Day celebratio­n, since new Ambassador Woonjin Jeong assumed his post in Sri Lanka in July, 2020. Ambassador JEONG presented his credential­s to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on September 30.

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the embassy did not hold the official National Day reception. However, the National Day was marked with television programmes on several local TV channels including ITN, Rupavahini and TV Derana.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawarden­a, several Sri Lankan officials and singers B&S (Bathiya and Santhush) have sent greetings on the occasion of the National

Foundation Day, the embassy said in a statement.

Noting the successful COVID-19 control measures in South Korea and Sri Lanka, Ambassador Woonjin said that both countries were among the safest countries in the world. He said he placed his faith in Sri Lanka’s resilience in overcoming any hardship and bringing about the economic revival.

The Ambassador in his message reiterated his willingnes­s to boost and upgrade bilateral ties, as Korea considers Sri Lanka as an important economic, trade and investment partner.
