‘Odyssey’, a first for the artists of the 2020 Group

-

‘Odyssey’ is the first exhibition of the 2020 Group, a gathering of senior artists of different disciplines who have banded together to rekindle an appreciation for representational art. ‘Odyssey’ will be on at the Colombo Art Gallery in Stratford Avenue, Colombo 6 for four weeks, from April 25May 30.

Most young artists choose to take up abstract art purely because they feel it is higher in commercial value and requires less painstaking study and skill. Brindley Jayatunga, Past President of the Ceylon Society of Arts and a co-founder of the 2020 Group said, “Unfortunately, this is largely due to the lack of appreciation from critics, commercially-driven markets and the inclinations or preferences of art teachers who influence students and young artists to follow their own styles.”

The 2020 Group will be organizing and facilitating the participation of local artists at art exhibitions, workshops, international art fairs, competitions and hopes to encourage young artists to explore a wide selection of genres based not on marketability of commercial value, but rather on their particular passions and skills.

The exhibition is at the Colombo Art Gallery- a new venue - the result of Dian Gomes’s long-standing passion for art, consisting of his private collection from across the globe along with a collection of the works of renowned local artists. The Gallery has been designed in keeping with international standards with bright and airy wallspace providing a respite from the hustle and bustle outside.
