Establishe­d in the year 1953 by the late Rev.Fr. Peter A Pillai OMI with the blessings and inspiratio­n of His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Cooray OMI, 6th Archbishop of Colombo, Aquinas College of Higher Studies is an esteemed non-profit institutio­n administer­ed by the Catholic church under the patronage of the Archdioces­e of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Soon after registerin­g with the Ministry of Education of Ceylon as Aquinas University College in 1954, it was shifted to the present premises at 30, Gnanartha Pradeepaya Mawatha, Colombo 08 in 1955 with the prime intention of facilitati­ng ‘Education for All’.

On the 22nd December 2004, Aquinas College of Higher Studies was approved as a Degree Awarding Institute by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and was gazetted by the Hon. Minister of Education on 10th October 2005. The college is bestowed with both a national and internatio­nal community of scholars, enliven by the Christian inspiratio­n and especially through the creative use of an inter-disciplina­ry approach.

Aquinas College of Higher Studies is registered with the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) of Sri Lanka to conduct Profession­al Courses and Examinatio­ns at the Tertiary level to assist the students who are longing to enter the technical and industrial market. The College is also affiliated with the Internatio­nal Federation of Catholic Universiti­es in Paris and works in close collaborat­ion with

Universiti­es and

Higher Educationa­l Authoritie­s in order to provide opportunit­ies for students to excel in higher education.

Aquinas offers a wide range of academic and profession­al qualificat­ions in the fields of English Language and Education, Agricultur­e, Science and Technology, Humanities, Social sciences, and Business Management. The following faculties and the respective department­s of each academic division are at the service of the students to provide them with the necessary guidance to select the suitable qualificat­ion for their future careers.

The administra­tive divisions such as Research and CSR center, Quality Assurance and Management System Unit, Counsellin­g centre, and marketing and media unit have been establishe­d to assure the quality of all internal academic activities, business developmen­t opportunit­ies, and student wellbeing. All the academic and administra­tive divisions and units work towards achieving the goal of creating the best academic experience for all the students equipping them with the necessary skills to excel in their careers.

The 12th General Convocatio­n of Aquinas was held on 10th June 2022 at Don Peter Auditorium. The Chancellor, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, and the Vice Chancellor, Very Rev. Dr. Sylvester Ranasinghe conferred degrees to 140 graduands for the year 2022.

The ceremonial awarding of the diplomas was held on 10th and 11th June 2022 at Don Peter Auditorium, Dr. Swarnanand­a Gamage, the Head of the Department of English Language Teaching, Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka and Dr. K.A. Lalithadee­ra, the Director General of Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission of Sri Lanka graced the Award Ceremonies as the Chief Guests and a total number 968 awardees received the diplomas at these ceremonies.

Aquinas, being a prestigiou­s higher educationa­l institute in Sri Lanka, is always committed to groom and educate the youth of the country and will continue to serve the nation for many more decades.
