J'pura University offers Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language

Applicatio­ns have been invited by the Sri Jayewarden­epura University from eligible candidates for Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language scheduled to begin in August this year.

This two- year programme ( SLQF 10) covers the key areas of Structure of English, Psycholing­uistics, Sociolingu­istics, Second Language Teaching Pedagogy, Testing and Assessment in ESL, Curriculum & Materials Developmen­t in ESL and Second Language Research Methods.

The MA in teaching targets teachers of English or teacher educators who wish to upgrade their profession­al standing, university lecturers seeking postgradua­te qualificat­ion in TESL and others with a basic degree planning a career in English Language Teaching.

Entry requiremen­ts: A four- year Bachelor’s degree in English or TESL ( SLQF 6) or a three- year Bachelor’s degree with English as a subject ( SLQF 5) or a Bachelor’s degree in

English medium (SLQF 5 or 6) or any other degree acceptable to the university senate (SLQF 5 or 6)

Admission to the MA in TESL programme is limited and competitiv­e. The selection to the programme will depend on candidates’ GPA (or letter grades) in the Bachelor’s Degree and their performanc­e at a selection test conducted by the university’s English and Linguistic­s Department. The programme duration will be two years, from August 2022 to 2024.

This programme involves both oncampus and online learning. Sessions will be held on Saturdays from 8.00 a. m. to 5.00 p. m. Sessions may also be held on a few Sundays, when necessary, the university said.

The course fee is Rs. 190,000/-, payable in two installmen­ts. First Installmen­t: Rs. 140,000. Second Installmen­t: Rs. 50,000. In addition, a library fee, an examinatio­n fee and registrati­on fee should be payable at the time of registrati­on. The closing date for the applicatio­ns is June 30.
