Energetic son of our soil determined to find solution to our energy crisis ....

- By K.L.Richard Walter Perera.

It is said that Nuclear Fusion promises a virtually limitless form of energy that unlike fossil fuels, emits zero greenhouse gases and unlike Nuclear Fission Power used today produces no long-life radioactive waste. Since the concept of nuclear fusion was discovered in 1930’s experiments have been ongoing and today fusion reactors around the world are all striving to reach the extremely high temperatures needed long enough to make fusion happen. Scientists say ‘this process is inherently safe” as fusion is a self -limiting process and if you cannot controle the reaction, the machine switches itself off ..

The other alternative is the Nuclear Fission which produces harmful radioactive waste in the fuel rods that need to be destroyed safely for thousands of years and require fuel like uranium that produces long lived radio active waste. Thus seeing the immense advantages the former has to the humanity , an energetic youth aged 32 years , engineer working as a project engineer at Savina Enterpises at Polgahaovita has come forward with his inovation to find a solution to our energy crisis Sri Lanka is facing now.

Perera Road,Kanuwana Ja-ela is determned to go ahead with his inovation which he says would be the best solution to our energy crisis..

Born to such a family -father Kumar De Silva a marine engineer, mother Mala Ranasi ghe Acqua Culturist, and having got the best results at A/L at St .Peter’s College at Bambalapitiya in 2008, he was intersted in nuclear fusion after seeing programnes on TV . When I visited the house, it seemed the entire house to be a lab as his mother had allowed him to use it for his experiments even from his very young age as she might have predetermined that one day she herself would witness her son with such a revolutionary innovation.

Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Times he said, “Achieving sustainable Nuclear Fusion has been one of the goals in physics for the past few decades. The search for an alternative energy source which doesn’t cause global warm is the main reason behind this drive.” As we know each year global temperature keeps rising and scientists warn that the planet woykd be inhospitable in a few decades at the current rate. It’s high time that we found an alternative energy source that doesn’t emit greenhouse gases like fossil fuels. There are many international efforts around. The globe researching to achieve this clear energy .... through namely ITER, JET and NIF. But their budgets are in the scale of Billion Dollars. So they say they are decades away from a breakthrough. So I believe my device -a prototype of my concept of achieving nuclear fusionwill be successful if implemented properly. My research paper is currently being studied by the Moratuwa and Peradeniya universities.’he concluded. The young inventor is in need of Rs 7m which he has estimated will be enough to cover the machinery cost and it will be really a major breakthrough eliminating the dependence on fossilfuels in Sri Lanka and the rest of the world.
