St. Michael’s Batticaloa clinch consolation team title at All-Island U-10 All Junior Tennis
St. Michael’s College, Batticaloa clinched the consolation ‘Team’ title in the ‘Red Ball Division’ at the recently concluded All-Island Under-10 Junior Tennis Championship 2022, held at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts in Colombo.
As a distinguished school, recognised for its rich history of sporting achievements, St. Michael’s fielded two junior teams in the Red and Blue Divisions consisting of young, motivated and enthusiastic students.
The Red Team showed immense promise winning seven of the eight matches. In the Group stage they secured wins against St. Peter’s College, Negombo, Dr. Kulasinghe College, Ja-Ela, St. Antony’s College, Wattala and Zahara College. The team triumphed in Round of 16 winning against Richmond, Galle. However, they experienced a setback losing to Maliyadeva College, Kurunagala in the quarter-final.
The Red Team was selected into the Consolation Round
and proceeded in the semifinals. They beat the Ananda College ‘B’ team and won the final against St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, becoming group champions and earning the crown of All-Island Under-10 Consolation Championship 2022.
The Red Team comprised G. Krishaangan, A. Atheeithan, Y. Thonishiyas, Daniel Aaron Lovell, P. Luxhimidhar, H. Nathuninth and A, Darkish.
The team’s success was due to the hard work of the children and the dedication of the Sports Teacher-in-Charge, M. Puvanatharshan, School Head Coach, V. Thineshkumar (Regional Coordinator) and the School Tennis Coach E. Lukshan, in addition to the school principal, Pius Anandarajah, who provided overall guidance to the entire team.
A total of 1,300 schoolchildren across 121 teams from across the island participated in the tournament. The organisers included fun activities for the children throughout the championship to educate and motivate young enthusiasts from grassroots level.
