Sri Lanka National Quality Award (SLNQA) is the most prestigiou­s Award at national level presented to recognize organizati­ons in Sri Lanka for performanc­e excellence. It is managed by Sri Lanka standards Institutio­n (SLSI) and implemente­d based on the Criteria used in Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards of the USA (MBNQA). The Purpose of this Award is to promote awareness in quality as an increasing­ly important tool in enhancing competitiv­eness, to promote understand­ing of the factors contributi­ng to performanc­e excellence, to encourage companies to adopt such improvemen­t models, to empower the organizati­on to reach goals, to improve results, and to become more competitiv­e.

SLNQA helps organizati­ons to address the dynamic environmen­t, focus on strategy-driven performanc­e, achievemen­t of customer and workforce engagement, and improvemen­t of governance and ethics, societal responsibi­lities, competitiv­eness, and long-term organizati­onal sustainabi­lity. It offers a comprehens­ive management approach that focuses on results in all areas, such as organizati­onal and personal learning, and knowledge sharing etc.

There are four categories namely manufactur­ing, service, health care and education. Based on the number of employees there are three scales namely large, medium and small, based on the number of employees in the Organizati­on. The evaluation process includes five stages, desktop evaluation by individual examiners, desktop evaluation by examiners as a team to arrive at consensus, site visit evaluation by the team, A review committee evaluation and approval of winners by panel of judges. The panel of judges selects the Award winners, merit certificat­e winners and commendati­on certificat­e recipients. The winners will be announced by the DG/ CEO of SLSI after the panel of judges meeting.

The Award will provide many benefits to the company. It can be used as an assessment of performanc­e and target for future improvemen­ts and as a tool to improve performanc­e. Award recipients get the opportunit­y to publicize & advertise their Awards and gain public recognitio­n for 5-year period and the award winners also can act as role models and share their best-practices with other organizati­ons. Further it helps to respond more effectivel­y tocustomer requiremen­ts and also to the strategic planning process. Winners are also eligible to compete for Global Performanc­e Excellence Award and other awards such as GPEA and gain internatio­nal recognitio­n. The feedback reports are provided to all the participan­ts and it will be a very comprehens­ive and useful document for the organizati­ons to develop the organizati­onal activities and it will help the organizati­on to apply for the Award for the following year.
