The new building wing has three new wards, all consisting of open beds catering to the middle-class. We have also introduced two purpose built modular operation theatres, primarily for neurosurgery and for orthopedic.

While highlighting that government hospitals need proper management systems and designed accordingly, people in the government must look at the Durdans Hospital in Colombo as an example to learn how a hospital is properly managed, President Ranil Wickremesinghe stressed.

Last Tuesday, Durdans Hospital unveiled its newly built Alfred Place wing and launched ‘The Journey of Care’, a book on the story of Durdans, with the President attending the event.

In his remarks Mr. Wickremesinghe stated, “Medicines keep evolving over time and we have to be ready to upgrade ourselves. More money has to be invested into medicine and new technology for development. The Durdans Hospital development is a good example for us in the government on how a properly managed hospital can do well. We have a lot of government hospitals in the country where the management has to be designed accordingly.”

“I am ensuring that management systems at government hospitals are improved over the next few years, a task we can undertake without any additional expenses. We have seen a lot of private hospitals developed to world class standards while we have a medical system where lots of foreigners visit the country for various medical treatments,” he added.

Mr. Wickremesinghe noted that many medical personnel and doctors are leaving the country. “We will have to train more doctors, educate them and that is why we have allowed non-government organisations to establish medical faculties in Sri Lanka. We need to keep up to the modern technology in the medical field.”

Durdans Healthcare Group, Chairman, Ajith Tudawe told the Business Times that the total project cost was over Rs. 3.2 billion. “The new building wing has three new wards, all consisting of open beds catering to the middle-class. We have also introduced two purpose built modular operation theatres, primarily for neurosurgery and for orthopedic. As the trend is now moving towards day cases, we have built a large space for day care patients.”

He also mentioned that a nurses’ dormitory is also built within the hospital premises, so that nurses on call could attend to patients immediately. “We have used world class modern technology and methods in redeveloping the hospital, increased the neuro specialised consultation chambers with all cutting-edge equipment. Recently we purchased the top end neuro microscope and navigator. The cosmetic clinic and a very spacious dental chamber have also been moved into the new hospital wing,” he added.
