‘Members with families Day’ by SLFUW
The Sri Lanka Federation of University Women (SLFUW) held its ‘Members with Families Day’ on Sunday, September 10, in the Auditorium at its Headquarters in Colombo.
SLFUW President Col Dr Udula Krishnaratne began her addres with a warm welcome to all present. Commenting on the long history of the SLFUW, Dr Krishnaratne paid tribute to Clara Motwani, American born educationist, who set it up nearly 83 yearsback. She thanked all members, nonmembers and well-wishers who helped in numerous ways.
The day’s programme included the presentation of scholarships to three female undergraduates, one each from the Faculties of Law and Indigenous Medicine of the Universiry of Colombo, and one from Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna.
Awards were also presented to felicitate three members for their outstanding contributions to SLFUW; Anadi Balasingham, Retired Senior Journalist (Lakehouse) and Consultant Tamil Mirror newspaper of Wijeya Newspapers, awarded by Dr Udula Krishnaratne; Chinta Munasinghe, Retired Commissioner of Inland Revenue, (in her absence accepted by Rohini Madiwake) presented by Sheela Ebert, and Neelia Fernando – specialist in the development and maintanence of information systems in the National Science Council. The award was given by Jayanthi Liyanage.
A cash donation was also handed over to the Visually Impaired Foundation by Dr Krishnaratne.
It was a fun-filled day with games and competitions as well as music, singing and dancing with prizes and surprises, and gifts for everybody. A joyous atmosphere prevailed throughout.
