Gonsalvez College of Bolawatta secures several 1st places at the All Island Western Music & Dance Competitio­n - 2023

The Western Band of Gonsalvez College, Bolawatta in the Wennapuwa Education Division of the Chilaw Education Region secured All Island 1st places in three categories and 2nd place in one event of the Western Music & Dance Competitio­n at National Level, organised by the Aesthetic Branch of the Ministry of Education, this year.

Gonsalvez College band competed under Category B and won All Island first places in Mixed Instrument­al Group, Senior Melodica Group and Recorder Solo Senior Boys. Secured second place in the Junior Melodica Group and Master S. Manoj was placed 1st in the Recorder Solo.

This becomes a historic achievemen­t as the students who do not study music as a subject being trained by the Sinhala Language, Teacher was able to achieve an All

Island standard by securing Three 1st places in the competitio­n.

For two consecutiv­e years Gonsalvez College has been participat­ing in Western Music & Dance Competitio­ns. The participan­ts were able to acquire Three All Island 1st places in the categories they competed. As resources and facilities available for these students were minimal, it is a great achievemen­t to have come to this level competing with other School Bands.

This accomplish­ment was made possible by the enthusiasm and the talent of the students of the band, with the dedicated training and guidance given by the Sinhala Language teacher Mr. Suneth Jayasanka along with the motivation and encouragem­ent offered by the school Principal Mr. Geeth Fernando.
