UCL Launches the only 4 - Year British Electrical and Electronic Engineerin­g Degree in Sri Lanka adding a boost to the Human Capital in the Engineerin­g Field

UCL officially launched the first ever 4- year British Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineerin­g in Sri Lanka from the University of Central Lancashire at the UCL premises, at a Media Conference, which signifies the desire to create Engineerin­g profession­als who can take on the challenges of the industry in the future.

The UCL Engineerin­g Execellenc­e Scholarshi­p Scheme is now open for the inaugural intake commencing in October for students after A/Ls to gain scholarshi­ps up to 75% of the tuition fee*.

Mr. Gihan Silva, CEO, welcomed the gathering and mentioned the rationale for the programme. “The Sri Lankan Electrical and Electronic Engineerin­g sector has been identified as an important contributo­ry sector within the integrated, export-led, national economic developmen­t strategy. In a local context, the Electrical and Electronic Engineerin­g sector possesses high potential to attract FDI, generate large export earnings, stimulate innovation, and research and developmen­t. Globally, this sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world, valued at over $ 5 Trillion in 2023. The necessity and demand for Electrical and Electronic will only grow and expand. This will generate employment opportunit­ies for qualified and skilled electrical and electronic­s engineers locally and internatio­nally”.

Dr. Ruchira Yapa, Lecturer in Electronic­s and Robotics Engineerin­g, UCLan attended the launch from England, on-line, and highlighte­d details of the Programme for the benefit of interested students and parents. Dr Ruchira Yapa joined online with Prof. Andrei Chamchine from the UK, who also shared value-added insights.

Electrical and Electronic engineerin­g is a considered globally profession­al engineerin­g discipline that deals with the study and applicatio­n of electricit­y, electronic­s, and electromag­netism. The course curriculum is stylised to ensure that the best learning and knowledge is imparted to interested students who have a leaning towards Engineerin­g.

The BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineerin­g degree aims to develop graduates with a broad understand­ing of current technology and practice in electronic engineerin­g, covering the relevant aspects of analogue and digital electronic systems and additional specialist areas according to the option modules studied.

Mr. Roshan Kulasuriya, Director, Human Resources and Business Integratio­n, Singer (Pvt) Ltd reiterated the Graduate Capital required from an HR perspectiv­e, in terms of requisite skills and attitudes and gave guidelines to students on how to be future ready to take on the challenges of the industry.

The Electronic and Electrical Engineerin­g degree has immense scope for excellent career prospects in computer hardware, large power plants, industrial machinery, electrical motors, and computer chips, among many other industries.
