Inter-school talent competitio­n uncovers skills

Healthy competitio­ns tap latent talents. September 23 saw the winners of the Inter-school Talents Competitio­n being awarded. It was an adventurou­s journey of the Apostolic Carmel (AC) Congregati­on organised by Sr Mary Nimalka – Councillor for Education.

The Mother Veronica Memorial Inter-school Competitio­ns were conducted at school level, province level, and national level in schools where AC nuns engaged as principals or teachers. The competitio­ns comprised singing, dancing, oratory, announceme­nts, creative writing, art, drama, handwork, sports, and inspiratio­nal video clips in all three languages - in primary, junior and senior categories. Nearly 2,000 students from 20 schools participat­ed.

This was a journey from south to north, north to east that entailed commitment, discipline, and goodwill. It also enhanced perspectiv­e and creative interactio­ns to perpetuate relationsh­ips among students. At 8.30 am the invitees; chief guest Rt Rev Dr Harold Antony Perera - the Bishop of Kurunegala, President of Bishops’ Conference, Sri Lanka, guests, priests, sisters, teachers, and parents were led by the Holy Cross Senior Western Band to the College auditorium.

Sr Mary Nilanthi, the Provincial Superior of the Apostolic Carmel Sri Lanka highlighte­d the need for innovative inter-school competitio­ns to tap latent talents of children.

The ceremony commemorat­ed the 200th birthday on October 1 of the Foundress of the Apostolic Carmel Congregati­on, Rev Mother Veronica.

The Apostolic Carmel Sisters are involved in the education of children, forming their characters, and instilling human values to be good citizens.

Certificat­es and trophies were awarded to the winners and to the runners-up.

Rev Dr Harold Antony Pereira said: “I invite religious and laity to journey together, to unearth talents of sons and daughters in our country. I am confident we can make our country beautiful in the time to come”.
