Some relief from wet weather as heavy rains will turn milder, says Met Dept

Heavy rains that have been pounding many parts of the country will subside, and milder rains can be expected for the rest of the week, the Met Department said.

More than 6,000 people from 1752 families from the Uva, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, North Western, Northern, Central, and Western provinces faced a lot of hardship because of the prolonged period of heavy rains.

Two deaths were reported and two people were injured due to weather-related accidents. 763 houses were also damaged.

The Meteorological Department said showers or thundershowers will occur over most parts of the country after 1 p.m. Heavy showers above 100 mm were likely in some parts of Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, and North-Central Provinces and in the Puttalam and Mannar districts. Fairly heavy showers above 50mm are likely in other areas.

The Western Province and the districts of Puttalam and Mannar may experience morning showers too. Misty conditions can be expected during the day in some areas of the Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva Provinces.

Kurunagala District Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Director said that five spill gates in Deduru Oya were opened due to heavy rains.

DMC Kandy said three people were injured when a tree fell in Kundasale. One succumbed to injuries.

Heavy rains resulted in some parts of the A7 Hatton-Colombo A7 road caving in.

The Irrigation Department has issued minor flood warnings for several low-lying areas of the Attanagalu Oya River Basin.

The Hydrology & Disaster Management Director of the Irrigation Department, Engineer S. P. C. Sugeeshwara, said the Nilwala river in Thalgahagoda, Panadugama, had reached minor flood levels.

Residents in Baddegama in the Gin Ganga area have been asked to be vigilant.
