Inaugural GatewayGoo­d Shepherd netball encounter on Tuesday

The students from one of the leading girls’ schools in Kandy will pit their skills against those from a premier internatio­nal school which promises to infuse a fresh spirit of friendly competitio­n and camaraderi­e into the world of schools’ sport. Gateway College, Kandy will take on Good Shepard Convent, Kandy at the inaugural netball encounter on Tuesday, November 14, which will be played for the Rohini Alles-Sr. M. Agnes de Alwis Challenge Trophy, at the Municipal Council Indoor Complex in Kandy.

The main focus of the day will be the Under-20 encounter between the two schools, vying for the Rohini Alles-Sr. M. Agnes de Alwis Challenge Trophy. Additional­ly, an Under14 match will be played between the two schools. The event will also feature an exhibition match between Gateway College, Colombo and Girls’ High School, Kandy, further adding to the excitement.

Honouring the occasion as chief guest will be Nirodha Abeywickra­ma, the President of Sri Lanka Schools’ Netball Associatio­n. She also holds office as the Principal of Maliyadeva Girls’ School, Kurunegala.

This significan­t event is scheduled to take place on November 14 at the Municipal Council Indoor Sports Complex, Kandy. The festivitie­s will kick off with the opening ceremony at 2.30p.m., followed by the Under-14 game at 3.20p.m., the exhibition match at 3.50p.m. and the highly anticipate­d Under-20 encounter at 4.30p.m. The western bands of both schools will add colour to the occasion by displaying their talents during the event.

Good Shepherd Convent, the leading Roman Catholic girls’ school in Kandy, was establishe­d in 1889, and boasts a rich history spanning 134 years. The convent has progressed steadily and evolved into one of Kandy’s most sought-after academic institutio­ns. Sister Mary Agnes de Alwis etched her name in history as the first

Sri Lankan Principal of the Convent on its 75th anniversar­y in 1963.

Gateway College, formerly known as the Kandy Internatio­nal School, was the first internatio­nal school in the hill country that came under the Gateway group in 1999. Rohini Alles played a decisive role in the developmen­t of this premium internatio­nal school. She has been a strength to the founder, R.I.T. Alles, especially in institutin­g its primary school. This trophy celebrates these admirable women in education.

The organisers confidentl­y predict that this landmark encounter will establish lasting traditions and forge strong bonds between the two esteemed institutio­ns, both on and off the field. This inaugural event marks a significan­t step forward for schools’ netball, promising an exciting day of competitio­n, unity and shared growth.
