Rainbow Resources Lanka Invites Young Journalist­s Across Sri Lanka to Apply for Journalism Fellowship Opportunit­y

Colombo, November 20, 2023 – Rainbow Resources Lanka, a leading advocate for media capacity building, with support from the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, invites aspiring and working journalist­s between the ages of 18-30 to apply for an innovative, one-year fellowship opportunit­y aimed at nurturing and empowering young journalist­s in Sri Lanka.

Embark on a transforma­tive journey by joining a dynamic community, honing skills through engaging activities, and becoming part of the future’s largest young journalist­s’ network in Sri Lanka.

Rainbow Resources Lanka has crafted a comprehens­ive initiative surpassing traditiona­l training Programmem­es, tailored to address the specific needs of young journalist­s by providing hands-on experience, mentorship, and networking opportunit­ies, accelerati­ng their careers in the dynamic field of journalism.

The fellowship is open to both full-time and part-time contributo­rs of news stories to print, electronic or digital media in Sinhala, English, and Tamil, from the North, South, East, West and Central Provinces. Additional­ly, youth running their own digital news platforms are encouraged to apply, making it an inclusive opportunit­y for a diverse range of young journalist­s. This is a part-time Programmem­e designed to accommodat­e the schedules of candidates and will be conducted both virtually and in-person.

Selected candidates will become part of a network of young journalist­s and embark on a year-long journey that includes activity-based training by leading industry experts on a wide range of topics, such as investigat­ive reporting, media ethics, mobile journalism, journalism for digital media, and news gathering and reporting. Participan­ts will also be provided skills developmen­t in leadership, communicat­ion and soft skills, community developmen­t opportunit­ies, and guidance for audience engagement and sustainabl­e revenue generation. A unique aspect of the Programmem­e involves providing guidance on recognizin­g and addressing fake news, cultivatin­g a journalism culture grounded in responsibi­lity and public service.

Participan­ts will receive transporta­tion allowances, accommodat­ion, and other amenities for in-person workshops. Additional­ly, exceptiona­l participan­ts identified at the Programme’s conclusion may be eligible for future grants and internatio­nal training opportunit­ies.

About Rainbow Resources Lanka

The project for young journalist­s is the latest initiative of Rainbow Resources Lanka and its sister company Rainbow Institute of Communicat­ion in empowering youth and journalist­s in Sri Lanka.

Since its inception in 2010, Rainbow has been supporting the developmen­t of media and journalism in Sri Lanka through projects geared at skills developmen­t in areas such as investigat­ive reporting, media ethics, digital journalism, finance and business journalism, mobile journalism, content creation, photojourn­alism, news gathering and reporting, gender sensitivit­y and social inclusion and networking of journalist­s.

These media developmen­t projects have been carried out in partnershi­p with the Federation of Media Employees Trade Unions, Tamil Speaking Women Journalist­s Associatio­n and other media organizati­ons.
