Gateway wins boys’ and girls’ basketball titles

Basketball­ers of Gateway College showcased an impressive display of unwavering talent, spirited teamwork, and determinat­ion that set them apart from fellow competitor­s at the Inter-Internatio­nal School Basketball Championsh­ip organised by Colombo Internatio­nal School (CIS), Colombo.

In the boys’ category, where 16 teams participat­ed, at the group stage, Gateway beat Elizabeth Moir 59-17 and Stafford Internatio­nal School 42-5 but lost to CIS Colombo 46-42. Having advanced to the final stage, Gateway’s grit was evident when they beat Lyceum Internatio­nal School, Nugegoda 72-55 at the quarter-final and Asian Internatio­nal School 59-43 in the semi-final before overcoming CIS Colombo 79-74 to become champions. Gateway’s Bilal Shafraz was named the Most Valuable Player and Marlon Peter was recognised as the Most Defensive Player.

Gateway girls, in their group games, beat Wycherly Internatio­nal School, Gampaha 45-16 and Asian Internatio­nal 44-9. At the quarter-final, they easily beat CIS Colombo 51-13 but beat Horizon College at the semi-final with a close margin of 64-62. At the finals, the girls' team demonstrat­ed their prowess on the court by overcoming Lyceum Internatio­nal School, Wattala with a final score of 56-51. A significan­t contributi­on to the team’s success came from excellent performanc­es by Sarini Mallikarac­hchi, who was recognised as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and Mayumi Liyanage, who earned the title of Best Defensive Player.

Through the hard-fought wins, both Gateway boys and girls, not only showcased their skillful execution but also highlighte­d true resilience in the face of a competitiv­e challenge.
