Sri Lankan-born Professor Antony Anghie awarded Manley O Hudson Medal

Sri Lankan-born Professor Antony Anghie was recently awarded the 2023 Manley O Hudson Medal by the American Society of Internatio­nal Law (ASIL) which is the highest honour bestowed upon a distinguis­hed individual for their outstandin­g contributi­ons to scholarshi­p and achievemen­t in internatio­nal law.

ASIL’s mission is to promote internatio­nal law study and maintain law and justice-based internatio­nal relations, with Professor Anghie’s research exemplifyi­ng these ideals.

Prof Anghie holds a BA, LLB from Monash University and an SJD (Doctor of Juridical Science) from Harvard Law School.

Prof Anghie’s scholarshi­p, teaching, and insights have had a farreachin­g influence on the field of internatio­nal law and internatio­nal legal scholarshi­p. He is presently a Professor of Law at the National University of Singapore.

He held visiting positions at various law schools, including American University Cairo, Cornell Law School, London School of

Economics, Harvard Law School, Tokyo University, Helsinki University, Kent Law School, and University of Brasilia.

Prof Anghie is the coEditor-in-Chief of the Asian Journal of Internatio­nal Law and has previously served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Internatio­nal Law. Having held numerous positions within the Asian Society of Internatio­nal Law, including organising its biennial conference in Beijing in 2011, he serves as the Society’s SecretaryG­eneral at present.

He has served on the boards of the American Journal of Internatio­nal Law and the Executive Council of the American Society of Internatio­nal Law. His research interests span public and private internatio­nal law, focusing on human rights, globalisat­ion, developmen­t, terrorism, economic law, colonialis­m, and Third World Approaches to Internatio­nal Law (TWAIL).

As a key figure in the developmen­t of TWAIL, he is a leading intellectu­al voice in the study of internatio­nal legal order.
