Sri Lankan-born Professor Antony Anghie awarded Manley O Hudson Medal

Sri Lankan-born Professor Antony Anghie was recently awarded the 2023 Manley O Hudson Medal by the American Society of International Law (ASIL) which is the highest honour bestowed upon a distinguished individual for their outstanding contributions to scholarship and achievement in international law.

ASIL’s mission is to promote international law study and maintain law and justice-based international relations, with Professor Anghie’s research exemplifying these ideals.

Prof Anghie holds a BA, LLB from Monash University and an SJD (Doctor of Juridical Science) from Harvard Law School.

Prof Anghie’s scholarship, teaching, and insights have had a farreaching influence on the field of international law and international legal scholarship. He is presently a Professor of Law at the National University of Singapore.

He held visiting positions at various law schools, including American University Cairo, Cornell Law School, London School of

Economics, Harvard Law School, Tokyo University, Helsinki University, Kent Law School, and University of Brasilia.

Prof Anghie is the coEditor-in-Chief of the Asian Journal of International Law and has previously served on the editorial board of the American Journal of International Law. Having held numerous positions within the Asian Society of International Law, including organising its biennial conference in Beijing in 2011, he serves as the Society’s SecretaryGeneral at present.

He has served on the boards of the American Journal of International Law and the Executive Council of the American Society of International Law. His research interests span public and private international law, focusing on human rights, globalisation, development, terrorism, economic law, colonialism, and Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL).

As a key figure in the development of TWAIL, he is a leading intellectual voice in the study of international legal order.
