In a strategic leap towards fostering global citizenshi­p and academic brilliance, the Colombo Internatio­nal Nautical and Engineerin­g College (CINEC) proudly inaugurate­s the Department of Chemistry, introducin­g the Bachelor of Science Honours in Chemistry. This program, approved by the Ministry of Higher Education in Sri Lanka, exemplifie­s CINEC’s dedication to nurturing competent, work-ready individual­s prepared for success on the global stage.

The introducti­on of the Department of Chemistry at CINEC signifies a monumental stride in pursuing academic excellence and global preparedne­ss. Candidates with three simple passes in Biological or Physical science streams at the G.C.E (Advanced Level) Examinatio­n or an equivalent qualificat­ion and a satisfacto­ry English proficienc­y level are welcome to partake in this prestigiou­s undergradu­ate program. Accommodat­ing a maximum of 60 students at a time, the inaugural intake for the B.Sc. Hons in Chemistry Degree Programme at CINEC is scheduled for January. This limited capacity ensures a focused and personaliz­ed learning environmen­t, allowing students to benefit from individual­ised attention and immersive educationa­l experience­s.

The B.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry degree program spans four years, with the initial two years establishi­ng a robust foundation in the principles of science and essential skills. The subsequent two years focus on a major in Chemistry, culminatin­g in an engaging capstone research project that puts theoretica­l knowledge into practical applicatio­n.

Integral to the programme is a mandatory practical/on-the-job training/industrial training component in the fourth year. This ensures a holistic learning experience, offering two distinct pathways for specialisa­tion: an 8-credit Research Project or an 8-credit Industrial Training facilitate­d by CINEC’s dedicated placement services.

The Department of Chemistry at CINEC is led by esteemed individual­s. Prof. Samantha Weerasingh­e serves as the Dean, and Dr. Nimshi Fernando leads as the Head of the Department. Supported by a distinguis­hed panel of experts, including Prof.

Sithy Iqbal, Prof M. C. M. Iqbal, and Dr R.D. Guneratne, the Faculty of Science is further fortified by the ongoing recruitmen­t of new staff, solidifyin­g the institutio­n’s commitment to academic excellence.
