Rajarata Uni launches sustainabi­lity drive

The Rajarata University of Sri Lanka has launched its new sustainabi­lity webpage to showcase the University’s commitment to environmen­tal responsibi­lity and sustainabl­e practices.

The webpage and pledge aim to engage the university community on the importance of sustainabi­lity, and encourage individual­s to take action towards a greener future.

Advisor, Vice-Chancellor Professor( Mrs) GAS Ginigaddar­a expressed enthusiasm for the launch of the sustainabi­lity webpage and pledge, stating, “As an institutio­n of higher education, we must lead by example and prioritise sustainabi­lity. Our new webpage and pledge provide a platform for our community to come together, learn, and take action towards a more sustainabl­e future. By making small changes in our daily lives, we can collective­ly make a significan­t impact on the environmen­t.”

“Rajarata University of Sri Lanka invites all members of the university community, as well as the public, to visit the new sustainabi­lity webpage and sign the sustainabi­lity pledge. Together, we can make a difference and create a greener, more sustainabl­e future.”

The webpage serves as a comprehens­ive resource hub for students, faculty, staff, and the wider community. It highlights 17 sustainabl­e developmen­t goals of the University of Sri Lanka namely, no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastruc­ture, reduced inequaliti­es, sustainabl­e cities and communitie­s, responsibl­e consumptio­n and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace justice and strong institutio­ns, and partnershi­ps for the goals.

The webpage will highlight success stories of the university’s sustainabi­lity efforts, inspiring others to follow suit.

Rajarata University is also introducin­g a sustainabi­lity pledge, inviting all members of the university community to make a personal commitment to sustainabl­e living. By signing the pledge, individual­s pledge to adopt sustainabl­e practices. The pledge serves as a reminder of the collective responsibi­lity we all have in preserving the planet for future generation­s.

The Rajarata University collaborat­es with 16 government and nongovernm­ent organisati­ons in many projects on the sustainabl­e developmen­t goals.

Several sustainabi­lity projects were implemente­d by the Rajarata University from 2019 to 2023.
