Colombo District Under-13 Badminton pool introduced

Four squads include 124 girls and boys

As part of its developmen­t and nurturing programme, introducin­g Under-13 badminton pools across all districts of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) initiated the squad for the Colombo District recently. As Colombo possesses one of the largest population­s in terms of engaging in badminton as a sport from a very young age, Regional Developmen­t Committee of SLC named four (4) pools of Under-13 shuttlers, from where the selected youngsters will go through a comprehens­ive training schedule.

They are pooled as Colombo South, Colombo North, Colombo Central and Colombo East, which will include a total of 124 girls and boys of the age category of Under-13. The squads include young and aspiring shuttlers who reached the National Junior Badminton Championsh­ip, organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Badminton

Associatio­n, as well as players who emerged champions, runners-up, semi-finals and quarterfin­als and promising male and female players who represente­d Colombo District at the age group of Under-13 last year.

Dilith Jayaweera, the Head of Derana Group of Companies and Derana Media Network graced the occasion as Chief Guest, when the pool was announced. In addition Amanda Weerasingh­e, member of Badminton Trust Foundation and former President of SLB; Roshan Gunawarden­a, Vice President of SLB and President of Badminton Regional Developmen­t Committee; Ajith Weerasingh­e, Honorary Secretary of SLB; Mangala Gamage, Honorary Treasurer of SLB; Buddhika de Silva, Vice President of SLB and other senior badminton stalwarts also took part at the occasion.
