STUDY MBBS ABROAD ?

- Professor T.B Abeysinghe.

Today the best medical colleges and universities for medical education are in countries like the UK and USA. The fees of medical universities in those countries are around 03 million US Dollar, though you can get excellent and valuable education from them. Very few SriLankan Students are studying in these medical colleges, but those medical colleges are not registered with SriLankan Medical Council. It’s because they consider that the registration of Sri Lankan Medical Council is unnecessary, and they don’t even bother to apply for it. Indeed, who would want to live with such advanced medical education in Sri Lanka, which has fallen into a precipice in all aspects today? Moreover, they are not impressed or transparent about the registration of foreign medical colleges in the Sri Lanka Medical Council. In fact, according to the Medical Council of Sri Lanka there has been no classification made regarding the minimum facilities required to register for a medical college. The Sri Lanka Medical Council takes care of them at their own discretion, this is a major damage to the medical field at Sri Lanka and this arbitrary act is done by the Medical Council of the whole world but only in the Sri Lankan Medical Council. Taking advantage of this dark process the Sri Lankan black market businessmen have illegally obtained the registration of the Sri Lankan Medical Council, which has the lowest educational level in the world and using it as a weapon to cheat Sri Lankan students and parents and send Sri Lankan students to low class universities in Russia, Belarus Georgia, Armenia and China.

For the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC)to approve a foreign medical college in Sri Lanka, there is absolutely no procedure, requirements, programme to be completed, and a framework that has the necessary foundation. The Sri Lanka Medical Council will register the respective medical college regardless the condition of the foreign medical college.

No other country in the world has a registration of foreign medical schools like Sri Lankas’ Medical Council. If a student brings a degree from a foreign country, they or the medical councils of all countries only check whether the medical college from which the medical degree was obtained is registered with the World Medical Council (WHO), and sometimes the relevant medical colleges are accepted by the relevant country's medical council. Accordingly, it has become a funny thing to see whether a foreign medical school is registered in Sri Lanka or not and intelligent students should not care about it. Whether registered with Sri Lanka Medical Council or not should not be considered as per the present situation.

The Government of Sri Lanka, according to the current new gazette (24/10/2023- Daily mirror newspaper) if a student brings a medical degree from a foreign country, especially if the student brings a medical degree from a medical college in a

SAARC country, the medical degree from which the student brings the medical college is World Medical Council registered, the student will definitely have the opportunity to work in a government or private hospital in Sri Lanka.

Indeed, although Sri Lanka is weak today in all aspects, Sri Lanka medical education is still strong. Similarly, a student can get the best medical education from a Medical Colleges located in SAARC countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lankan student can get at a very low cost on a concessional basis. While studying in the thirdclass medical colleges in Armenia, Georgia, China, Russia and Belorussia the students suffer from the fact that they do not get a chance to get a good medical education, as well as in terms of the language, the cold climate and the high prices of the food. Roughly the monthly expenses in countries like Russi, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia and China costs between 800-1000$.Winter clothes costs about USD1500$. Specially, when traveling to Russia or Belarus from Sri Lanka, the duration will be between 15-20hrs, and it costs around Rs.700,000LKR. But, traveling to Bangladesh or Nepal, the duration will be 3hrs and it costs around Rs.150,000LKR.Thus, the total cost of studying medicine including hostel, traveling, wintercloth es,foods in Russia,Belarus,Armenia,Georgia and China for a period of 6 years will be around 44,000,000 – 44,700,000 rupees in Sri Lankan currency. Why spend so much money and suffer for 6 years and study an education that has no value and quality?

Therefore, the best choice for Sri Lankan students for studying abroad should be to study in a medical college in a SAARC region and only medical degree students studying in SAARC countries are invited to study for free. Being able to get a job at a salary of 3- 4 million Sri Lankan Rupees and in this season, there is high value for the degree taken by SAARC universities in Arabic countries. Being able to get a world-class medical education, being able to enjoy the dual climate same as our country, and the monthly cost of living is around 25,000LKR, and being a neighboring country, pursuing higher education from a medical college located in the SAARC region is a very good investment. As for the present situation, It is not at all necessary to consider the registration of the Sri Lanka Medical Council and the Sri Lanka Medical Council of any country in the world does not make a specialty of a registered doctor. There are also many ways to get registered in the Medical Council of Sri Lanka if someone wants to study in a SAARC region country. According to the above, it is best for Sri Lankan students to choose a medical college located in the SAARC region for their medical education.

Let's make it an opportunity to show another side to students in foreign education. That is about security. Let's show this in two aspects. The first sector is that there are robbers in the streets where foreign students hang out in Russia, Belarus,

Georgia and Armenia, and they attack the students and rob them of money. In addition, a gang formed and robbed students' rooms when they went to lectures. This is also supported by the hostel authorities.

Even if the students inform the relevant authorities about their safety or health or any other issue, those authorities will not consider it. The agencies sent are also uncountable. There is no one to say.

The second aspect is the war. Today, the war between Russia and Ukraine has affected neighboring Belarus and Georgia. Therefore, students studying in countries like Russia, Belarus and Georgia are feeling the heat of the war and the students are scared to death of when their lives will be destroyed. It is extremely dangerous to study in Armenia because of the fierce war between Azerbaijan and Armenia. People in Armenia are very violent and there are always conflicts. Not a long before we heard a mob attacked a group of students studying in Yerevan were hospitalized, and one of our students were raped by them. This situation exists in countries like Belarus, and it is not at all appropriate to send our students for education or any other activities. But there is no danger in studying in India Bangladesh Nepal and security is better for women or anyone than Sri Lanka. Not only was the security good, but the people of India, Bangladesh, Nepal and the university authorities also show great respect to Sri Lankan students.

Pointing out all the above matters, to the students who are going to study in a foreign medical school and to the parents who are thinking of sending them to a foreign medical school that when considered from all aspects, a student shouldn't go to a country like Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia and China for medical education. It is best and safer for a student to go to a SAARC country such as India, Bangladesh and Nepal.
