Thirty First Anniversar­y Celebratio­ns of ICLP and Awards Ceremony 2023

The Institute for the Developmen­t of Commercial Law and Practice (ICLP) is a Non-Government­al Organizati­on establishe­d in the year 1992 with the objective of advancemen­t of commercial law and the scholarshi­p underpinni­ng it. ICLP celebrated its 31st anniversar­y at the Annual Awards Ceremony held on the 19th January 2024 at the BCIS Olympus Auditorium.

Hon. Justice Arjuna Obeysekera, Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. His

Lordship in his keynote highlighte­d the importance of Alternativ­e Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms as an effective means of resolving commercial disputes to overcome the delays and drawbacks in litigation. His Lordship further underscore­d the necessity of educating and raising awareness about such Alternativ­e Dispute Resolution processes among legal profession­als as well as the community in general.

Ninety eight students from various profession­al discipline­s received diplomas and certificat­es in the Diploma in Commercial arbitratio­n, Diploma in Shipping Law and Practice and the Certificat­e Course in Commercial Law. The ‘S.S. Wijeratne Award for the Best Student in Commercial Arbitratio­n Course 2022/2023’ was won by Mr. G. Dinusha Maduranga and Ms K.N.D Fernando won the ‘S.S. Wijeratne Award for Best Student in Commercial Arbitratio­n Course 2023’. The ‘U.L.

Kadurugamu­wa Award for the Best Student in ICLP-CCC Shipping Law and Practice Course’ was won by Ms Rosali Anandappa. All these programs were held on virtual platforms facilitati­ng the participat­ion of students joining from overseas. ICLP successful­ly delivered outreach programs on Arbitratio­n and Constructi­on Adjudicati­on targeting the Gulf Region in collaborat­ion with the Sri Lankan Quantity Surveyors’ fraternity in Oman and Qatar.

Due to the growing demand, ICLP is considerin­g embarking on new ventures such as, an Advanced Diploma in Commercial Arbitratio­n and a Course in Constructi­on Adjudicati­on and Constructi­on Arbitratio­n for Sri Lankan profession­als residing overseas. The Diploma in Shipping Law and Practice is scheduled to commence on the 11th February offering special concession­s for students and under graduates.
