The New Year is well on its way and if the foodie in you feels adventurous, here are some of Colombo’s interestingly diverse offerings

BROWN SUGAR CAFÉ AND DESSERT BAR

Starting 2024 with a sweet tooth is made easy with this quaint café tucked away in the heart of Colombo. DiarraWickramasinghe has been baking from the comfort of her home before she stepped out quite literally together with her partner Adnan Izath and scouted for a space to start up the café.

Switching things up and replacing the flowers in a flower bouquet with soft pillowydoughnuts is what Brown Sugar got famous for which they still do upon request. The café serves as a brunch spot, which serves a local ‘Damn Fine’ coffee which truly lives up to its name. Available over the counter are their super fresh well-known doughnuts- like Cookies n’ Cream, Nutella Crunch, Mint Choc Chip, Brownies- like the Classic and Nutella Stuffed and cookies like the Peanut Butter Stuffed, White Choc Chunk, and Double Choc which is made daily.

The beverage menu consists of classics we grew up with like Tinkiri and Avo plus innovative twists like the Sparkling Coffee Mojito- Coffee infused with refreshing Mint and Lime.

The brunch menu consists of a small sweet section and an extensive savoury menu that is bound to satisfy any type of craving.

ISLE AMORE PIZZERIA

After 5p.m., the doors of Brown Sugar Café open up quite literally to an outdoor space that operates as a Pizzeria for the night. Translating their love for the island through food, you would find island-inspired pizza cooked in an open wood fire oven.

Apart from this they also have classics like a Margarita, Marinara, 4 Cheese and Beef Pepperoni, and wood fire wings to accompany them.

The pasta corner also has some delicious dishes like the 4 Cheese and Beef Meatballs (recreate the iconic lady and tramp moment sitting under the famous That’s Amore heartshaped booth)

Finish off your pizza with a Crust Dipper - a dipping sauce made special to finish off that boring pizza crust.

KAFFI NORDIC BAKERY + COFFEE SHOP

Hidden inside the hustle and bustle of Crescat Boulevard,Kaffi is the perfect spot for a fika(a break involving a coffee and treat of some kind).

After moving to Sri Lanka from Norway, Silya the café owner found herself missing these coffee breaks which is a Nordic tradition, which led her to open up her own space in Arugambay for anyone looking for a fika.It attracted many expats as the coffee culture was still new to locals and its growing success led them to branch out to Colombo and Ahangama.

The café is all about offering

a piece of the Swedish way of life, the uncomplicated way to enjoy life, a philosophy called lagom(loosely translated as everything in moderation). Apart from an excellent cup of coffee that is brewed with love using local beans, the café has a great variety of home-baked sweet and savoury items that can be bought over the counter, with sugar-free and vegan options also available.

The menu consists of some classic light meals, ideal for onthe-go, quick meals like the classic BLT sandwich, and granola bowl, and a range of coffees and teas to enjoy with a treat for that perfect koselig (feeling of coziness, intimacy, warmth).

The café has great work-fromcafé vibes.
