The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan partnered with EDEX Expo 2024 as the International Education partner

-

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan is an independent, autonomous, and constitutionally established institution of primary funding, overseeing, regulating, and accrediting the higher education efforts in Pakistan. The main objectives of HEC are improving the quality of higher education being imparted across the country, enhancing access to quality higher education, and stepping up the relevance of academic and research programmes. The number of registered universities in Pakistan is 251.

The role of HEC in paving the way for a research culture is also worthy of note. The HEC’s endeavours in this context range from sponsoring Pakistani researchers locally and abroad to equipping higher education institutions with infrastructure and technology. HEC encourages and supports Pakistani universities to conduct joint research projects with foreign institutions. It has established several Offices of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORICs) at universities to finance and help commercialize research work and support entrepreneurship. Currently, HEC is funding many Centers of Excellence, national centers established through the Public Sector Development Programme, and centers of advanced studies.

In addition to scholarships for Pakistani nationals, HEC offers scholarships for deserving students from OIC least developed countries, Small Island Developing States, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. During the delegation-level talks between the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the President of Sri Lanka, it was agreed that both countries would enhance cooperation in the higher education sector through networking of the best Pakistani universities with Sri Lankan Higher Education learning institutions. In this backdrop, HEC offers 1,000 Allama Iqbal Scholarships to Sri Lankan students. 800 fully funded and 200 partially funded scholarships at BS, MS, and Ph.D. levels in medical, engineering, computer science, business administration, mass communication, media studies, basic and social sciences, etc. There are currently 357 Sri Lankan scholars studying different degree programmes in top-tier Pakistani universities and medical colleges. 10 Sri Lankan students have graduated from Pakistani universities funded by Allama Iqbal Scholarships and are employed in multinational ventures across the globe.
