SSC Press Box ‘must’ go on par with rest of the world

-

Similar to Lord's cricket ground in England, the Sinhalese Sports Clubs (SSC) holds a prestigious status as the ‘Home of Cricket’ in Sri Lanka. However, despite its esteemed reputation, the facilities at its media enclosure are woefully inadequate, particularly in terms of accessibility and infrastructure.

A key issue is the lack of accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The absence of a lift within the four-storied building renders it virtually inaccessible to anyone with mobility impairments. Journalists are compelled to navigate an arduous ascent of nearly 100 steps to reach the media box, effectively excluding those with disabilities from accessing this essential facility. Sri Lanka boasts some of the best facilities in venues across the island but SSC.

Similarly, with the addition of three new grounds – Dambulla, Pallekele and Sooriyawewa – the remaining ones – Galle, R. Premadasa and P. Sara Oval – have evolved with time, technology and according to the era. But unfortunately not the SSC. The standards and facilities still remain retro.

In addition, the journalists, including those of the female gender, have to pass through two dormitories, which presents an uncomfortable and unprofessional environment for journalists covering international matches. It is imperative that these deficiencies are addressed immediately by the management of the Sinhalese Sports Club, giving priority to enhance accessibility by installing a lift or alternative means of vertical transport to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access the media box without hindrance. Sri Lanka has some of the best facilities across those international venues which meet international standards, and it is sincerely anticipated SSC management will address these issues before the venue hosts another international match.
