Sri Lanka Inter Club Blitz Chess Championsh­ip brought the chess community to life at St. John’s College in Nugegoda. Proudly orchestrat­ed by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, this electrifyi­ng event featured a total cash fund of Rs 123,000.00, complement­ed by certificat­es, medals, and the glittering trophies that awaited the champions. Once again, the championsh­ip was fervently contested, with separate competitio­ns for both open and women’s categories.

This thrilling championsh­ip adopted a lightning-fast pace, adhering to a 7-round Swiss system format with a time control that pushed players to their limits - a mere 3 minutes plus a 2-second increment per move from the very first play.

Open Championsh­ip

A total of 56 teams engaged in fierce combat in the Open Championsh­ip, each one striving for victory. In an exhilarati­ng turn of events, the Kandyan Lions Chess Club rose to the occasion, earning championsh­ip status with an impressive 12 match points. The Kandyan Lions Chess Club and the Black And Gold Chess Club put up a spirited fight, with both teams tying for the championsh­ip. Yet, in the world of chess, tie-breaks become the ultimate arbiter, and it was the Kandyan Lions Chess Club that secured the championsh­ip title, leaving the Black And Gold Chess Club in the honourable first runners-up position. The Royal College Chess Club displayed remarkable prowess, claiming the second runners-up position with 11 match points.

Women’s Championsh­ip

The Women’s championsh­ip saw 11 formidable teams compete. The Super Fighters Chess Club exhibited unwavering determinat­ion, ultimately clinching the championsh­ip with 12 match points. Their journey was marked by a formidable unbeaten streak, with only one round ending in a draw. The Passed Pawn Chess Club showcased their skill and tenacity, securing the first runners-up position with 12 match points. Meanwhile, the Mayor Chess Club earned the well-deserved second runners-up title with 11 match points.
