CFW@21: Beyond fashion, turning Colombo into a destination hotspot

- By Shannon Salgadoe

It’s that time of year once again as Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) returns for its 21st edition, set to take place from March 6 to 9 across multiple locations in Colombo.

Continuing with the theme of sustainable fashion, this year the platform focuses on promoting Colombo as an attractive destination as it looks beyond runways to transform the city into a vibrant hotspot while showcasing the work of Sri Lankan and international designers.

“We plan to use the platform to showcase Colombo not only as a vibrant destination for travellers but also as a centre that facilitates the creative industries. CFW will take place across multiple locations on Galle Road; it’s a new format,” said Ajai Vir Singh, Managing Director of CFW Holdings.

Since its inception, CFW has played a crucial role in developing and reimagining the fashion industry in Sri Lanka, establishing a thriving ecosystem that embraces sustainability and innovation. Today, more than 80 percent of leading Sri Lankan designers are the product of CFW’s development system.

“I’m proud to say that the team and the designers who have worked with us in the industry for the past two decades have created a sustainable fashion ecosystem. CFW has become one of the most important fashion weeks and fashion platforms in South Asia. It is also known as the South Asian hub, where designers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Europe come and showcase every year, sharing knowledge with the Sri Lankan designers who are now going through to different parts of the world as well,” says Ajai.

Designers from Italy, England, Pakistan, and India, including names like Samant Chauhan, Payal Pratap, Alessandra Lorusso, Manoviraj Khosla, Afsana Ferdousl, and Charlotte Allen, will display their designs at CFW 2024 along with Lankan designers such as Darshi Keerthisena, Sonali Dharmawardena, Amilani Perera, Aslam Hussein, Kamil Hewawitharana, Dinushi Pamunuwa, Ayesh Wickramaratne, Charini Suriyage, and Asanka de Mel. Fifteen emerging designers will also have their moment on the catwalk.

The media briefing announcing CFW’s 21st Summer edition took place at Cinnamon Grand Colombo with long-term partners Juniper Group, Vision Care, Tresomme, Ramani Fernando Salons, and Hameedia continuing their journey of two decades with CFW. Mastercard continues its support as title partner for the second year in a row.

Lending their support as host hotels this year are Cinnamon Grand Colombo, Taj Samudra, and Galle Face Hotel while NDB Wealth Management is the investment and wealth management partner. Chupa Chups by Perfetti is CFW’s lifestyle confectionery partner.
