SLFUW celebrates International Women's Day

-

The Sri Lanka Federation of University Women marked International Women's Day with a series of projects in line with this year's UN theme of 'Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress'.

The SLFUW will award 16 scholarships to underprivileged female undergraduates from State universities. A career guidance course will be conducted to develop their personality and social skills, and enhance their employment prospects.

School girls will also be beneficiaries of a similar scheme where they would develop knowledge and skills to face the future.

The SLFUW visited the Kandauda Panguwa National School in Siyambalanduwa, a low-income area in the Moneragala District, and contributed cash to procure technical items for its newly-constructed three dimensional open-air mathematical laboratory. Scholarships were awarded to 4 female students on the recommendation of the principal.

SLFUW President Colonel Dr Udula Krishnaratne and a few council members visited the Dewamulla Temple in the Kalutara District where chief incumbent Rev Nahalle Wajiragnana thero, a senior lecturer at the University of Ruhuna, had selected women and children from the adjacent village Govinna as recipients of welfare packs. They received a bag of dry groceries, essential items and cash. The children received educational equipment and cash. A donation was also made for medical expenses of the priests.

The SLFUW conducted a treeplanting campaign on its premises in Colombo. A variety of plants, including jak, mee, breadfruit, cashew, mango, avocado and king coconut were planted.
