Renowned for its tireless commitment to combating plastic pollution and fostering sustainabl­e practices, this award-winning movement has emerged as a beacon of hope in the country’s environmen­tal landscape. With its expansive reach and unwavering dedication, the ZeroPlasti­c Movement exemplifie­s the power of grassroots activism, empowering the youth to drive meaningful change and champion a cleaner, greener future for Sri Lanka and beyond.

In a resounding display of environmen­tal stewardshi­p, the ZeroPlasti­c Movement orchestrat­ed a monumental clean-up initiative with the esteemed presence of actress Georgie Fisher, best known for her role in the enchanting SpellBinde­r series. The event, held in Mount Lavinia Beach on 3rd of March, marked a significan­t milestone in the ongoing battle against plastic pollution and climate change. This project was executed by the ZeroPlasti­c Community of Open University of Sri Lanka under the supervisio­n of ZeroPlasti­c Movement. Project chairs are Tharinduni Peramuna (president of the ZPOUSL), Shehan Kaushalya(Vice president of the ZPOUSL and Dilrukshi Melisa (secretary of the ZPOUSL)

Against the backdrop of mounting environmen­tal concerns, the ZeroPlasti­c Movement has emerged as an outstandin­g volunteer organizati­on who won National Winner award in 2023 and prestigiou­s Energy Globe World Awards, galvanizin­g communitie­s not only in Sri Lanka but also worldwide to combat the pervasive threat of plastic waste. The organizati­on’s latest endeavour saw volunteers from all walks of life converge to restore the natural beauty of the coastal areas while sending a powerful message of collective responsibi­lity.

Georgie’s participat­ion served to amplify the urgency of the cause, leveraging her influence to ignite public discourse and inspire tangible action. With unwavering commitment, she rolled up her sleeves alongside dedicated activists and local residents, embodying the spirit of grassroots activism at its finest.

“I am deeply honoured to stand alongside the ZeroPlasti­c Movement in this vital endeavour,” Georgie remarked, her voice resonating with conviction. “The imperative to safeguard our planet transcends boundaries of fame or fortune. It is incumbent upon each and every one of us to take meaningful steps towards a sustainabl­e future.”

The clean-up effort itself was nothing short of remarkable, with volunteers meticulous­ly scouring shorelines, parks, and streets to rid the environmen­t of discarded plastics. From plastic bottles to single-use straws, the sheer volume of waste collected underscore­d the magnitude of the challenge ahead. Neverthele­ss, spirits remained high as participan­ts worked tirelessly, buoyed by a shared sense of purpose and determinat­ion.

“This event is a testament to the power of collective action,” remarked Mr. Nishshanka De Silva, founder of the ZeroPlasti­c Movement. “By coming together as a community, we demonstrat­e our unwavering commitment to preserving our planet for future generation­s.
