Abidh Jameel -- from Sportsman of the Year to recipient of Trinity’s coveted Ryde Gold Medal
Trinity College, Kandy, one of the most respected schools in the country, proudly bestowed the prestigious Ryde Gold Medal upon Senior Prefect Abidh Jameel, a shining example of excellence in all endeavours. Abidh’s journey to this pinnacle of achievement was marked by a trail of accolades, each testament to his unwavering commitment and remarkable talent.
As the recipient of the Ananda Madena Memorial Trophy for the Best Sportsman of the Year 2023, Abidh’s prowess in sports shone brightly. From first place at the Junior National Weightlifting Championship 2023 to his remarkable performance at the All-Island Weightlifting School Games 2023, Abidh’s athletic feats were extraordinary.
His leadership as captain of the weightlifting team of 2023, further underscores his exceptional talents. He also represented the 1st XV rugby team and played as the wing-three-quarter. He is a double-coloursman winning it for rugby and weightlifting.
Yet, Abidh’s achievements extended beyond the realm of sports. A versatile talent, he was a member of the Sri Lanka National Debating Pool 2023. He graced the stage as a member of the cast in the Trinity Musical Drama ‘A Glimpse of Broadway’.
His passion for music found expression as a member of the school’s Senior Western Music Society.
Abidh has also shown academic excellence by obtaining nine ‘A’ passes for his Ordinary Levels and is presently offering his Advanced Levels in the Physical Science stream. As the Student Chairman of the T 150 Sesquicentennial Celebrations of Trinity College, Abidh left an indelible mark on the school’s history.
His oratorical prowess, recognised with the Lakshman Kadirgamar Gold Medal for English Oratory in 2021, exemplifies his eloquence. Abidh’s lineage, deeply rooted in Trinity, adds another layer of significance to his achievements. As the fifth generation of Trinitians in his family, Abidh continues a proud legacy of excellence that spans generations.
In honouring Abidh Jameel with the Ryde Gold Medal, Trinity College celebrates his accomplishments and recognises him as a beacon of inspiration for future generations of students.
