As global economies experience a surge in economic activities, there is an increasing demand for engineers in countries like Australia and New Zealand to sustain their thriving economy. A recent report indicates that Australia alone will require 233,000 profession­als, including 133,000 Engineers, by 2033. These are some of the future opportunit­ies awaits to those who commence engineerin­g education in Sri Lanka.

SLIIT’s Engineerin­g degree programme emerges as an attractive choice for students contemplat­ing migration to these countries for either undergradu­ate or postgradua­te studies. The institutio­n facilitate­s transfer pathways to several distinguis­hed Australian and New Zealand universiti­es after two years of education at SLIIT, presenting students with invaluable internatio­nal prospects to advance their educationa­l pursuits. Notably, SLIIT has establishe­d Memoranda of Understand­ing (MOUs) with esteemed Australian universiti­es such as the University of Queensland, Curtin University, Deakin University, Macquarie University, and James Cook University, offering seamless transfer pathways through SLIIT after completing one or two years of engineerin­g education. Furthermor­e, students aspiring for further education in New Zealand can transition via the University of Waikato.

SLIIT also offers a well-funded research programme, featuring postgradua­te degrees up to MPhil and PhD levels. Complement­ing this, the Engineerin­g First Year unit (EFY) provides crucial transition support, while the curriculum aligns with the Outcome Based Education (OBE) system, facilitati­ng both local and internatio­nal accreditat­ion. Some of the SLIIT’s Engineerin­g programmes such as Civil Engineerin­g, and mechanical engineerin­g are recognised by the Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) while the faculty is currently pursuing to get recognitio­n for other programmes as well.
