Nurturing Diplomatic Fluency: My Journey at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute

-

Embarking on a journey of learning is always a leap of faith, a step into the unknown. When I decided to explore the realms of Diplomacy and World Affairs at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic training Institute (BIDTI) in 2018, I had little idea of the profound impact it would have on my life.

From the moment I stepped into BIDTI, I was enveloped in a supportive atmosphere that encouraged me to delve deeper into the intricacies of Diplomacy. The institute became my second home, igniting within me a newfound passion for understanding global affairs and diplomacy's role in shaping our world.

The journey towards earning my Diploma and Post-graduate Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs was not merely about acquiring a certificate; it symbolised a transformational experience filled with both practical insights and theoretical knowledge. Week after week, I was privileged to engage with distinguished experts in the field, including ambassadors, law professionals, and heads of international organizations. One of the most remarkable aspects of BIDTI was its commitment to providing a holistic education in diplomacy. Beyond traditional diplomatic studies, we delved into areas such as international law, current affairs, and the workings of international organizations. Each topic was meticulously crafted to offer a comprehensive understanding of the world's complexities within a limited timeframe.

Under the guidance of Madam Pamela Deen, whose unwavering dedication propelled us to new heights, we explored diverse subjects ranging from the history of diplomacy to contemporary challenges in the Middle East and human rights issues. The interactive nature of the sessions fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas, fueling our curiosity and deepening our understanding. As we progressed through the programme, we realised that diplomats are indeed made, not born. BIDTI's innovative approach to teaching combined theoretical knowledge with a practitioner's perspective, equipping us with the skills and insights necessary to navigate the complexities of international relations.

My time at BIDTI was not just a period of academic growth but also a profound personal transformation. From a university student who often wished for lectures to be cancelled, I emerged as someone whose life revolved around the world of diplomacy. The institute's diverse student body, comprising individuals from various backgrounds, enriched my learning experience and broadened my perspectives. The impact of BIDTI extends far beyond the classroom. The institute serves as a hub of knowledge and enlightenment, nurturing the intellectual growth of its students and shaping future leaders in diplomacy. My association with BIDTI fills me with pride, knowing that it has played an important role in shaping my intellectual journey and preparing me for the challenges ahead.

As I reflect on my time at BIDTI, I am grateful for the dedication of the entire staff, from Madam Deen to the librarian, whose unwavering support made our learning experience truly exceptional. I am confident that the institute will continue to uphold its legacy of excellence in diplomatic education. For anyone passionate about diplomacy and world affairs, BIDTI offers a unique and life-altering learning experience that transcends boundaries and empowers individuals to take on the challenges of our globalised world.
