Recall Act amended for a second time

-

The Recall Acts was amended for a second time on Friday. The second amendment happened swiftly and was necessary as there were a few grammatical mistakes. A few words were crossed out and one of the articles was given a number. The opposition keeps insisting that the law is in violation of the separation of powers because a recall case involving 2 legislators is currently being handled by the court. The opposition parties did not attend the session to protest against the current state of affairs while the DOE party left the conference room shortly before the voting round was about the start and after having made it clear that it does not support this law. The new law was adopted with 27 votes. MP Diepakkoemar Chitan who is one of the legislators whom the opposition considers a recalled MP also voted for the law that directly addresses his case. His ally, Raymond Sapoen, is currently abroad and therefore could not attend the session. The chairwoman of Parliament, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, explained that the technical staff of Parliament also could have corrected the mistakes because no big changes were made. But given the fact that the issue is rather sensitive, she deemed it necessary to amend the Recall Act during a public session. She explained that she also did it to make sure that “we cannot be accused of having committed fraud.” MP Ronnie Brunswijk (ABOP) referred to previous statements that he had made to make it clear that the amendments were done to hastily and that this is why mistakes were made.
