Gersie: “Bank accounts at local banks are completely safe”

-

“The bank accounts of the public at the general banks are completely safe,” said the president of the Central Bank of Suriname (CBvS) in response to reports which suggest that the bank accounts of all account holders at local banks will soon be shared with the Tax Office. “Each report which suggests that the bank secret is being or will be violated is not based on the truth. I wish to make it clear that information of account holders at local banks strictly fall under bank secret and therefore can never be shared with the Tax Office or any other state agency,” said Gersie. The Finance minister recently also announced that his ministry does not stick its nose in the people’s bank accounts. It neither takes a peek at accounts with local currency nor with foreign currency. The minister’s statements regarding the autonomous operations of the local banks are aimed at putting everybody’s minds at ease as they have nothing to worry about. The Central Bank made it clear that bank accounts that hold either local or foreign currency are safe and that it will spare no efforts in keeping the nation’s financial system stable. The Central Bank is urging everybody not to pay any attention to reports and/ or rumors that are being spread by third parties. “You can safely put your money in the hands of our banks and do not take any actions that will pose a threat to our economy and which can also put your own safety at risk.”
