3 road deaths in 1 day

-

The number of road deaths jumped from 67 to 70 on Friday. A pedestrian and a moped rider died in separate traffic accidents that took place in Paramaribo. A 3yearold girl died after a bus and a moped collided in the Van Drimmelen Polder which is located in the Nickerie District. The little girl was sitting behind her dad on a moped when they rammed a bus. The girl sustained serious injuries and died shortly after the traffic collision. She is the fourth road death in the Nickerie District and the 70th road death in the country. 53yearold Kenneth Meerzorg died at the crossing of the Indira Gandhiweg and the Broedershoopweg. When the police arrived at the scene of the accident, the moped rider was already dead. The moped rider and the truck driver were riding along the Indira Gandhi weg. When the truck driver took a right turn to go into the Broederhoopsweg, he rammed the moped rider. The police reportedly confiscated the man’s driver’s license. The moped rider’s body was taken to the Coroner’s Office for an autopsy. A pedestrian was scooped up by a car at the crossing of the Letitia Vriesdelaan and the Henck Arronstraat. The driver reportedly jumped out of his car and fled the scene on foot. The victim died on the way to the hospital. District Attorney Bibian Tjin Liep Shie told Times of Suriname that the driver committed a crime by fleeing the scene of the accident. “Although he left his car at the scene of the crime, he did not stay which is punishable by law. He did not give anybody the opportunity to determine his identity. If the victim suffers serious injuries and the driver goes away, that driver is leaving the person in a helpless state. Tjin Liep Shie who finds it awful that the driver fled the scene pointed out that there are quite a number of unsolved traffic cases where people were left dead at the scene. “It is a human being, a fellow person. I ask myself what is going through some people’s heads when they commit such a crime,” said Tjin Liep Shie. The Public Relations Office at the Police Force Suriname (KPS) indicated that there was a man at the scene and that he told the police that he was a passenger in the car. 35yearold Rayen H claimed that he was hitching a ride from the driver who he know as Borsu and who lives somewhere in Latour. He also claimed that he had fallen asleep in the car when he suddenly heard a loud thud.
