Record number of murders in 2016

-

MP Krishna Hussainali-Mathoera (VHP who is a former police chief recently pointed out that there was a record number of murders in 2016. “41 murders is the highest figure for the past 20 years,” said MP Hussainali-Mathoera. Police Commissioner Agnes Daniel reportedly presented the statistics at an info session on violence that had been organized last week by MP Hussainali-Mathoera.

The legislator pointed out that the number of murders went up with nearly 65%. MP Hussainali-Mathoera strongly believes that the increase in the number of murders is the result of the unsuccessful policy of the government in combination with the social consequences of the crisis that has been created. “If we remain on the sidelines the numbers will keep going up.

Most of the victims are female. Women pay a high price during every crisis. That also turns out to the case this time,” said the legislator who added that the UNDP’s 2016 Caribbean Human Development report stressed the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals, executing policies oriented toward groups “who have been left behind” and increased political participation for disenfranchised groups. The UNDP report reveals how disparities in income, education, health and between men and women are slowing down progress in the Latin American region and around the world. “The vulnerable position of women and youths requires extra protection,” said the legislator who pointed out that the government should take note of the recommendations of the UNDP’s report. “The government’s policy leads to more murders and crime. It creates stress and problems which is why people have become less tolerant,” said MP HussainaliMathoera.
