Police and military units to tackle crime

President Desi Bouterse recently announced firm measures against crime. Each gang of robbers in Paramaribo can reportedly expect a visit from the police soon. The special operation will reportedly start this week. Youths have recently declared their support to armed robbers on social media sites. This has not gone unnoticed. Even the president is aware of the worrisome trend. These youths and their parents can also expect a visit of a phone call from the police. The justice officials and the local gangs already know the names of the youths who refer to themselves as supporters of robbers. The president pointed out that the police force has identified 10 locations in Paramaribo where suspects are reportedly hanging out. Police units will reportedly raid these locations with the assistance of military units. The head of state has condemned the attitude of youths who are inciting violence and expressing support for robbers on social media. Several people who are deemed bad role models for youths because of their lush lifestyle in combinatio­n with lawless conduct. Sources told Times of Suriname that these individual­s were discussed at a security meeting that was held at the Presidenti­al Palace. “We will talk to their parents,” said the president in response to the fact that these youths have urged others to retaliate because a robber was gunned down by a retailer during the weekend. The parents of a 17-year-old boy who has called on others to kill people have told Times of Suriname that they will bring their son to the police. The teenager claimed that “there is a team that will take justice into its own hands for the killing of a team member.” The teenager reportedly referred to the robber who was gunned down during an armed robbery attempt.
