Boy knifed to death at school concert

A 16-year-old boy lost his life Saturday night after he was stabbed to death by a school dropout during a concert at the Covent Garden Secondary School, on the East Bank Demerara (EBD). The dead teen has been identified as Brian Charles Yearwood of Lot 69 Grove Public Road, EBD. He was stabbed in the region of the chest and was pronounced dead at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre shortly after 20:00hrs.

The incident occurred in the Covent Garden Nursery School compound, a stone’s throw from the Secondary school.

The police said that they are pursuing a 17-year-old Kaneville, EBD resident who allegedly stabbed Yearwood who was said to be preparing to sit the Caribbean Examinatio­n Council (CXC) at Covent Garden Secondary next year.

Investigat­ors are also looking for several other teenagers who witnessed the stabbing of the 16-year-old. Monday the teen’s grandmothe­r, Veronica Yearwood said that she was sleeping when she heard loud crying in the lower flat of the house around 23:00hrs on Saturday. “When I went down to check, I see his (deceased) mother crying and she say that Brian is dead. I see one of his friends there and he said that someone stabbed Brian and he is dead”, Yearwood revealed.

The woman said that they immediatel­y rushed to the Diamond hospital to confirm whether the news they had received was true.

“When we went there, he was already dead. The friends them claiming that they didn’t see anything and one of them say all he know was that Brian was sitting, waiting on someone when he see bottle start pelting.”

She further stressed that another friend claimed that he saw a crowd and when he went up, he saw the wounded teen. The grandmothe­r said that relatives are unsure as to what really transpired that caused the 16-year-old to lose his life.

The woman explained that around 17:00hrs on Saturday, the teenager said that he was going to the concert and took a lift from his father.

“He left home and went to the concert and the next thing we hear was that he was dead”, his grandmothe­r lamented.

She said that the young man is not known to be a troublesom­e person and does not interfere with anyone. “He washes his own clothes and he does everything for himself. Every morning, he sweeps the front yard. He is a very helpful child”, the elderly woman said while adding that since his death, his father and mother are down. The teen leaves to mourn his four siblings and parents.
