Alleged Montrose granny killer for High Court trial

The preliminary inquiry into the murder of Danrasie Ganesh, who was found dead in her Montrose, East Coast Demerara home, concluded Monday before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Courts.

It resulted in 23-year-old murder accused, Collin Alleyne, of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, being committed to stand trial at the High Court in Georgetown for the capital offence. Magistrate Ally-Seepaul ruled that upon revision of the evidence led by the prosecution, the court was of the opinion that there was sufficient evidence against Alleyne for him to be tried for murder. According to reports, Ganesh’s battered body was found in her home on August 1, 2015 by relatives who went to check on her after she failed to answer her neighbours’ calls. The gruesome murder was captured on surveillance camera. It was reported that Ganesh’s killer, believed to be Alleyne, clubbed her on the head with a tyre wrench and dragged her into a corner, where she collapsed. It was then the killer wrapped a hand-towel around her neck, kicked and stomped the old woman until she lay motionless. Alleyne was captured three weeks after the murder at Guyhoc Park, Georgetown. He reportedly told detectives that a male relative of Ganesh paid him $700,000 to kill the old woman and steal documents pertaining to her property. During the preliminary inquiry, the prosecution led by Police Sergeant Ayesha Gibbon called several police and civilian witnesses to testify. These included Police Sergeant Rodwell Sarrabo, who testified in relation to a statement he took from Alleyne while he was in custody at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown.
